Crooked door? Stop using it now. When a cable snaps or slips, one side of the door is still under spring tension and the other isn’t. A crooked door can jam, come out of its tracks or fall.
Do: unplug the opener and keep people, pets and cars out from under the door.
Don’t: pull the emergency release while the door is open or crooked.
Don’t: try to force rollers back into the track or rewind a cable. Cables and bottom brackets are under extreme tension.

How cables work
A steel lift cable runs up each side of the door, from the bottom corner bracket to a drum on the spring bar above. Together with the springs, the cables carry the weight of the door. If one breaks or comes off its drum, that side drops and the door hangs crooked.
What you might see
One side of the door lower than the other
A cable that’s frayed, rusty, slack or snapped
Cable unwound or bunched up on the drum
The door stuck partway, or the opener straining
Tip: Text a photo of both bottom corners and the drums above the door. It helps us bring the right parts.
Rollers that wobble, are cracked, or have bent stems
A roller popped out of the track
A track bent from a bump by a car or bin
Salt air and humidity on Oahu are tough on steel parts, so rust on rollers, bearings and cables is common. A worn roller can jump the track and pull the door crooked, so it’s worth replacing before that happens.
Just noisy, not crooked? A tune-up may be all it needs.
The door is clamped and supported so it can’t move while it’s worked on.

Find the cause
Both cables, drums, bottom brackets, rollers, tracks and springs get checked. A snapped cable is often a sign of another problem, like a broken spring or rusted hardware.
3
Repair and re-hang
Cables and worn rollers are replaced, tracks are straightened or re-set, and the door is put back level.
4
Balance and test
The door is balanced and run with the opener so it travels smooth and even.
Most often a lift cable has snapped or slipped off its drum, so one side drops. A roller out of the track or a broken spring can also cause it. Stop using the door and text a photo of both sides to (808) 600-8393.
Can I still use my garage door with a broken cable?
No. Running it can bend the door panels and tracks or pull the door out of its tracks completely. Unplug the opener and keep clear.
Can I put my garage door back on track myself?
It isn’t recommended. The door is heavy and still partly under spring tension, and the cables and bottom brackets can cause serious injury. This is a job for a licensed technician.
Why did my garage door cable snap?
Common reasons are rust and wear, a broken spring, or the door hitting something while closing. We check for the cause so it doesn’t happen again.
Do you replace garage door rollers?
Yes. Worn, cracked or noisy rollers are replaced, and the rest of the door can be tuned up at the same visit.
Do you work on commercial doors?
No. ZS Overhead Doors does residential garage door repairs only.
This page is general information. Every door and opener is different, so if in doubt, leave it to a licensed technician.
