Safety first. Never adjust springs, cables or bottom brackets yourself. They’re under extreme tension. Keep clear of a moving door, and only pull the red emergency release when the door is fully closed.

Step-by-step

What is your door doing?

Symptom 1

The door won’t open at all

Broken torsion spring with a gap, next to the opener rail

Likely causes

  • No power to the opener (unplugged, tripped breaker or GFCI outlet)
  • The lock / vacation button on the wall control is on
  • A broken torsion spring: look for a gap in the coil above the door
  • The emergency release was pulled and the opener is disconnected

Try this first

  • Check that the opener light comes on, and test the outlet with a lamp
  • Press the wall button, not just the remote
  • Look (don’t touch) at the spring above the door for a 2–3 inch gap
  • Stop pressing the button if the opener hums but nothing moves

See a gap in the spring? Don’t try to lift the door. See torsion spring repair.

Symptom 2

It goes down, then reverses back up

Garage door safety sensor near the floor with its light on

Likely causes

  • Something is blocking the safety sensor beam, 4–6 inches above the floor
  • A sensor got bumped out of line, or its lens is dirty
  • Low, bright sun shining straight into a sensor
  • Something under the door, or the door binding in the track

Try this first

  • Clear the area and wipe both sensor lenses
  • Gently line the sensors up until both lights are on and solid
  • To close it for now, press and hold the wall button until the door is fully down (works on most openers). Keep everyone clear

Sensors won’t stay lined up, or the wires look damaged? We’ll sort it out.

Symptom 3

It lifts a few inches, then stops

Break in a torsion spring, circled in red
The break in a spring (photo: ZS)

Likely causes

  • Almost always a broken spring. The opener can’t lift the full weight of the door
  • Sometimes the opener’s force setting, after a spring has gotten weak

Try this first

  • Stop. Running it again can damage the opener
  • Keep people and cars clear, the door is extremely heavy
  • Don’t pull the emergency release unless the door is fully closed

This one needs a pro. Read about spring repair or call now.

Symptom 4

The motor runs but the door doesn’t move

Opener trolley on its rail with the red emergency release cord
Trolley and red release cord (photo: ZS)

Likely causes

  • The trolley is unhooked because the red release cord was pulled (common after a power outage)
  • A stripped gear, or a broken or slipping belt or chain

Try this first

  • With the door fully closed, reconnect the trolley. On most openers, pull the cord toward the door, then run the opener and it will re-latch
  • If it still won’t move, unplug the opener. Don’t try to re-thread a belt or chain

Stripped or broken drive parts are a repair for ZS. See opener repair.

Symptom 5

The door is crooked or stuck partway

Likely causes

  • A snapped or loose lift cable on one side
  • A roller popped out of the track
  • A bent track

Try this first

  • Don’t use it. Unplug the opener
  • Keep people, pets and cars out from under the door
  • Don’t try to force it down or back into the track

Crooked doors are urgent. See cable & roller repair or call now.

Symptom 6

The remote is dead, but the wall button works

Four Chamberlain garage door remotes

Likely causes

  • Weak batteries in the remote or keypad
  • The lock / vacation feature is on
  • The remote lost its programming

Try this first

  • Replace the batteries
  • Turn off the lock feature on the wall control
  • Reprogram the remote with the “learn” button on the opener (see your manual)

FAQ

Door won’t open or close: questions

Why won’t my garage door close all the way?

The most common reason is the safety sensors near the floor. If the beam is blocked, dirty or out of line, the opener reverses the door. Clear and wipe both sensors and line them up until both lights are on and solid.

How do I close my garage door if the sensors aren’t working?

On most openers, press and hold the wall button until the door is fully down. Keep people, pets and cars clear, and let go to stop it.

How do I open my garage door when the power is out?

With the door fully closed, pull the red emergency release cord and lift the door by hand. If it feels extremely heavy, stop: the spring may be broken. Reconnect the opener when the power comes back.

Why does my garage door open a few inches and stop?

That’s usually a broken torsion spring. Stop using the opener and call or text (808) 600-8393.

My remote doesn’t work but the wall button does. What’s wrong?

Usually weak batteries, the lock feature on the wall control, or the remote needs to be reprogrammed with the opener’s learn button.

When should I stop and call a pro?

Any time you see a broken spring, a snapped or loose cable, a crooked or off-track door, or the door feels very heavy. Those parts are under extreme tension.

This guide is general information. Every door and opener is different, so check your opener’s manual, and if in doubt, leave it to a licensed technician.
