Heard a loud bang and now the door won’t open? That’s usually a broken torsion spring. Spring repair is our specialty, and we fix broken springs for homeowners all over the island.
Why you shouldn’t replace a torsion spring yourself. A torsion spring is wound tight enough to lift a door that can weigh hundreds of pounds. Unwinding or winding one without the right winding bars and know-how can throw tools, break bones, or drop the door. Online DIY kits and imported springs are often the wrong size for your door, which strains the opener and can fail early.
Do: stop pressing the opener button and keep people, pets and cars out from under the door.
Do: only pull the red emergency release when the door is fully closed.
Don’t: touch the springs, cables or bottom brackets. They are under extreme tension.
What to expect
What we do on a spring repair visit
1
Quick quote by text
Send a photo of your spring and door. We look it over and give you a quote before anything is booked.
2
Secure the door and inspect
We secure the door, then check the springs, cables, drums, bearings and bottom brackets so nothing else is about to fail.
3
Measure and match the spring
Wire size, inside diameter and length are measured so the new spring matches the weight of your door. Springs are 100% made in the USA. No eBay or Amazon imports.
4
Install and balance
The new spring is wound with proper winding bars and the door is balanced so it lifts smoothly and stays put halfway open.
5
Tune-up and safety check
Rollers, hinges and springs are lubricated, and the opener’s force and auto-reverse are tested before we leave.

While we’re there
Opener acting up too?
A broken spring is hard on an opener. We also repair openers and install new Chamberlain belt and chain drive openers with built-in WiFi, so you can open and check your door from your phone.
Look at the bar above the door. A broken torsion spring has a visible 2–3 inch gap in the coil. You may also have heard a loud bang, or the opener hums and the door only lifts a few inches. If you’re not sure, text a photo to (808) 600-8393.
Can I still open my garage door with a broken spring?
It isn’t recommended. Without the spring, the door is extremely heavy and can drop. Stop using the opener, keep people and cars clear, and only pull the emergency release when the door is fully closed. Call or text us if a car is stuck inside.
Is it safe to replace a torsion spring myself?
No. Torsion springs hold enough tension to lift the whole door, and winding or unwinding one without the right tools and training can cause serious injury. Spring replacement should always be done by a licensed technician.
Should both springs be replaced at the same time?
On doors with two springs, both have usually done the same number of open-and-close cycles, so the second one is often not far behind. We’ll look at your setup and explain your options.
How much does torsion spring repair cost?
It depends on your door’s size, weight and spring setup. Text a photo of your spring and door to (808) 600-8393 and ask for a quote.
What kind of springs do you use?
We only use 100% made-in-USA torsion springs, matched to your door. No eBay or Amazon imports.
Do you install new garage doors or do commercial work?
No. ZS Overhead Doors focuses on residential garage door repairs across Oahu: springs, cables, rollers, off-track doors, sensors, and opener installs and repairs.
This page is general information. Every door is different, so if in doubt, leave springs to a licensed technician.
